As part of my ongoing Health, Wellness, & Self-care Series to help us all get through the dark days of the covid-19 global pandemic, I’m sharing my husband’s tried and true recipe that is the BEST homemade natural remedy to Kickstart your immune system when you need a MAJOR BOOST!

In my article, 5 Amazing Natural Remedies to Get Over a Cold and FLU FAST, I focus on remedies that you can buy at the store or online to have in your medicine cabinet. Whereas, in THIS post, I’m sharing my family’s unique recipe that my husband has perfected over the years! Literally ANY time we get sick, feel a cold coming on, or the flu/virus takes over our whole household, consuming this Health Elixir literally curbs the illness in its tracks due to its incredible Anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, alkalizing, & anti-viral properties!

In my recent articles, The BEST Turmeric Milk Recipe & the Amazing Health & Immune Boosting Benefits of Nettle, I go more into detail about WHY chronic inflammation is the root cause of all major health issues. In short, inflammation is the body’s natural response to an illness or virus, which wreaks havoc on the body’s immune system over time if this inflammation is chronic. This is why reducing widespread inflammation is so detrimental in Jumpstarting one’s immune system to allow it to use all of the body’s defenses in fighting an invading virus and/or battling a chronic illness.

I’m a sufferer of Hashimotos Disease, which is an auto-immune disease where my own body sees my thyroid as a threat and goes into “attack mode” on a daily basis, lowering my immune system’s natural ability to fight off actual threats like the common cold and other viruses. I suffered from an underactive thyroid at the early age of 22 and I’ve been passionate about getting to the root cause of all major chronic diseases ever since, which has led me to the amazing world of Holistic Medicine! At the heart of Holistic Wellness, the focus is on building a strong foundation for ultimate health and wellness, and how to take care of our bodies on a physical, mental, & spiritual level. In Holistic Medicine, the root causes of an illness are addressed, rather than simply dealing with the side effects of a disease, without addressing what caused the disease in the first place (which is what Western Medicine and Conventional Medicine does).

I’m relaying this personal info to convey that when we suffer from chronic illness, we have to be ever more so mindful about keeping our immune systems as strong & thriving as possible, particularly when facing a major threat like covid-19 or even the flu! We are that much more susceptible to these illnesses because our immune systems are already compromised while it deals with the chronic illness that already exists in the body.

And if you DON’T have a chronic illness and/or a compromised immune system, that’s wonderful! That means you can implement these immune boosting tips, which will help keep your body in a state of homeostasis, balanced and thriving to prevent a chronic illness from ever taking over in the first place!

I digress, so let’s get back to what makes Ginger Brew AH-mazing!

The best part is that this Health Elixir uses ALL natural, herbal & plant-based ingredients you probably already have at home! And if you don’t, you can easily find them at any grocery store (not just a health food store) and I’ve linked the ingredients down below, as well.

There are a lot of “Fire Cider” type of recipes out there that tout similar immune boosting claims with the caveat that they may be absolutely disgusting to consume, just sayin’! ๐Ÿ˜‚ And honestly, when I feel like the embodiment of misery when I’m sick, I really don’t want to consume vinegar, raw garlic or juiced onion, call me crazy! ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜… You DON’T have to worry about that with this Ginger Brew recipe!

My husband’s Ginger Brew has quite a kick, due to the cayenne pepper, which is actually invigorating! And on the whole, it’s very easy to drink & is totally customizable to your tolerance/preferences! If you want less of a kick, put less cayenne pepper, or more of a kick, add more! Most of the time, my husband just wings it with the same ingredients and hopes for the best. It may turn out a bit differently each time, but each variation has the same benefits, for the most part because the same ingredients are used. My very picky 3 year old asks for sips when he sees us drinking it and he’s finished his own cup, as well! ๐Ÿ‘

Storage & Leftovers:

This brew is best stored in the fridge once it’s made to prolong its freshness. I feel it’s safely stored in the fridge for up to a week (the apple cider vinegar & lemon juice help keep it fresh without preservatives). With that said, we’ve honestly kept it refrigerated for longer and it was fine, but ideally, you probably should freeze leftovers after a week and heat up on the stove as needed. ๐Ÿ‘Œ You can also pour leftovers into ice-pop trays & freeze to make immune-boosting ice pops!

Best Served:

It’s best served warm, to soothe the throat, and to also push any bacteria lurking in the throat to your stomach where your stomach acids will kill the bacteria of the illness. This is also why warm fluids are recommended for colds such as herbal teas and soup. Don’t burn yourself! When I say serve warm, I mean the amount of heat you would imagine for the ideal cup of tea!

Video Tutorial! Ginger Brew: Immune Boosting Health Elixir Recipe! (Those are my husband’s hands, not mine ๐Ÿ˜…

—๐ŸŒŸ3-5 L Filtered water

—๐ŸŒŸone large ginger root peeled and chopped

—๐ŸŒŸ2 Lemons (zested & 8thed) or 100% Pure, Organic Lemon Juice

—๐ŸŒŸ4 TBS Turmeric powder (maybe 5 or 6? I don’t really measure)

—๐ŸŒŸยผ tsp Black Pepper

—๐ŸŒŸยผ tsp Cayenne Pepper

—๐ŸŒŸ8 oz Raw Honey or Manuka Honey

—๐ŸŒŸApple Cider Vinegar with the “mother” (you’ll see floating sediment at the bottom of the bottle where all the healing properties are– some cheap brands filter this out and reduce the overall benefits. (to taste–this is really up to your personal preference)


1) Mix everything in a large pot except for vinegar

2) set to boil

3) once boiling, cover and reduce to simmer for 30 min, stirring occasionally

4) pour into bottles, mason jars or whatever you have that can handle hot liquid (no plastic!)

5) I usually add one shot glass of ACV to every Liter bottle I make

**In my bottles I usually try to keep the lemon wedges and ginger in to add to the flavor. You can opt to strain these out before pouring into your containers. You can also use 100% Pure, Organic Lemon Juice instead of lemons if you’re in a pinch and/or want to make this recipe as easy as possible! ๐Ÿ‘**

It’s best to drink this Ginger Brew as soon as you feel those first signs of sickness coming on. Ginger Brew is also a great way to start your day every morning! You can add a smaller amount of the concentrated brew to filtered water to make it less strong to use this recipe the same way you would drink warm lemon water with apple cider vinegar in the mornings, except Ginger Brew has even more benefits to not only alkalize your body, but to also reduce chronic, widespread inflammation!

There’s no wrong way to try out this Ginger Brew recipe and there’s lots of room for creativity! You can even turn your finished blend into ice pops if you prefer a cooler option in the warmer months, for your kiddos, or to soothe a very sore throat! Just pour the finished Ginger Brew into ice pop molds and freeze! This is also a great way to use any leftovers!

As an added bonus, this Ginger Brew is not only an amazing Immune Booster, it also helps digestion, relieves gas, heartburn, and nausea! Ginger Brew helps reduce acidity in the body, which is always helpful because the standard American Diet is highly acidic, overall due to refined grains, sugar, dairy, sauces, and meat without a balance of alkalizing foods such as leafy greens, certain fruit/avocado, lemon water, apple cider vinegar, and fermented foods.
