Hi, everyone! Today, as part of my Wellness & Self-care Series that I’ll be doing to help us all get through this crazy, coronavirus global pandemic, I’m going to be focusing on 6 Ways to Reduce Stress & Anxiety while social distancing/self isolating at home!

We are currently in the midst of the Coronavirus global pandemic and I’m here to help provide you with blog posts related to self-care tips and the amazing natural remedies we have available to us! When we feel threatened by a looming virus that we can’t necessarily control, we have to focus on what we CAN control, by nurturing our body’s immune system & feeding our body with essential nutrients. Sometimes, a crisis leads us to forming a better understanding of what our bodies need in order to heal and to function optimally.

In this time of crisis, it’s more important than ever to find balance, keep ourselves as healthy as possible by boosting our immune systems, getting adequate sleep, & continuing to move our bodies on a daily basis. I know how hard it can be to practice ongoing social-distancing in order to flatten the curve, but it’s the most important thing we can do to stop this virus and to keep our families safe!

6 Ways to Reduce Stress & Anxiety During Quarantine & Social Distancing!



Aromatherapy via diffusing essential oils throughout the house and/or wearing plant-based perfume with aromatherapy benefits throughout the day. Humans have used Aromatherapy for thousands of years! Aromatherapy is defined as the use of aromatic essential oils for medicinal purposes to improve the health of the body, mind, and spirit. It is believed to enhance both physical and emotional health by reducing anxiety, calming the mind, easing tension, and promoting uplifting feelings. Relaxing our mind allows our body to use its resources to heal effectively when dealing with physical diseases, as well.

Apart from providing a pleasant smell, Aromatherapy in the form of essential oils can also provide respiratory disinfection, decongestant, and psychological benefits! Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory system, the part of the brain connected to our sense of smell. These molecules that enter one’s nose or mouth first pass to the lungs, and from there, to other parts of the body, ultimately reaching the brain. When these molecules make their way to the brain, the limbic system is activated. The Limbic System is linked to our emotions & fight/flight response (when feeling anxious or stressed), our heart rate,ย blood pressure, breathing, memory,ย stress, and hormone balance. In this way, essential oils are thought to have a subtle, yet holistic overall effect on the body, which is why they are gaining more and more popularity in modern alternative medicine as we understand more about the scientific, healing benefits behind each individual essential oil!

My FAVORITE essential oils to diffuse that are also the most affordable, without sacrificing quality is the Plant Therapy brand, which also offers KID-SAFE options for children 2+ years old. This is so important, because throughout the years I’ve seen many MLM brands ::coughs:: such as Doterra and Young Living, advocating the usage of dangerous essential oils that are harmful to animals as well as very young children (such as peppermint, for example—should be avoided by children until the age of 10!). On the flip side, there are super cheap options that are available that I wouldn’t trust due to many companies using chemical variations to cut their costs.

I’ve done my research after 13 years of switching to a greener lifestyle and I definitely feel good about this brand and highly recommend these blends for double duty germ fighting & reducing stress: Kid Safe Germ Destroyer & Germ Destroyer in 1oz size & No Worries Blend & this Kid Safe Set of 3 Blends & this set of ROLL ON Blends. Be Creative:

Whether that’s painting, doing more arts & crafts (for adults) or with your kids at home, to something as simple as Adult Coloring Books! I’m so glad to see “adult” coloring books becoming more popular! They can literally be found almost everywhere online and in almost any Genre. I’m sure by now you’ve all heard about the calming effects coloring has and how it’s so helpful at alleviating anxiety and stress. These claims alone are wonderful since coloring books and some colored pencils, crayons, or markers are all very affordable. What I feel is particularly helpful is finding a coloring book that has a genre that makes you feel good in some way. For example, I couldn’t pass up this Beauty and the Beast coloring book pictured above as well as this gorgeous Beauty & the Beast Adult Coloring Book because it has such a strong nostalgic element for me that it makes me happy every time I’m working on a new coloring page!

When we’re stressed, one of the best ways to de-stress is to find a simple connection to something that we find uplifting, which will rejuvenate us and remind us how to feel joy in simple things. This way we’re not only coloring because someone told us it’s good for anxiety, but because we actually want to do it since it’s linked with positive emotions/experiences. It really makes so much of a difference! It’s not just what we do, but how we approach what we’re doing and what we feel while we’re engaging in the activity that makes all the difference in the outcome.

Genre themed coloring books can transport a person to another time and place, just like an actual book. It spikes a person’s imagination, creativity, and joy. All of these elements combine to increase one’s overall well-being. Wellness is something we have to work on everyday, but it doesn’t have to feel like work! It doesn’t have to be coloring if that’s not your thing! Coloring is one example of how accessing creativity can reduce tension, stress, & relieve anxiety. The goal is to get those creative juices flowing, connect to your sense of imagination and wonder, & get lost in an activity. Find what you love and do more of it! Enjoy every moment and truly live!

Move Your Body:

I can’t stress this point enough! (no pun intended ๐Ÿ˜…). Exercise is key to releasing pent up anxiety, stress, & tension. I’ve always done my workouts at home, as opposed to a gym, so if you’re short on space, literally move the coffee table aside and roll out your workout mat. The most important thing is to find a workout style that you actually enjoy doing! It can be as simple as going for daily walks with your family/children, gardening outside in your backyard, rolling out a yoga mat in your backyard while your children play (my current go-to method). It’s been tougher than ever to get my daily workout in now that I’m homeschooling my special needs pre-schooler, but it’s not impossible! We do a lot of movement breaks during the day with sing-along dance apps for kids like GoNoodle & KooKoo Kangaroo on YouTube, which involves following a simple dance sequence, but they really get you moving, jumping, working your upper and lower body in new ways! And everyone gets to let loose a little bit and be silly!!

Keep your body hydrated:

In addition to plain water, I highly recommend drinking fresh herbal teas that do double duty to keep your immune system strong! A happy immune system enables the rest of your body to function optimally, handling stress to its best ability. There’s a direct relationship between immune health and anxiety. The more we take care of our bodies and keep our immune systems happy, the better able they are to handle stress: both emotional & physical stress.

I always keep a reusable water bottle with me (even when I don’t leave the house) because it serves as a reminder to take sips throughout the day and also allows me to keep track of how much water I’m drinking. I know if I’ve filled my 20oz water bottle 3 times, I’ve had 60oz (not including herbal tea). Black Tea, Oolong Tea, Green Tea, & White Tea are all diuretics, which will make you pee more as you flush toxins from your body (as well as a certain amount of water that needs to be replenished). This is why I don’t count any of these teas towards my daily water intake goal.

Herbal tea, on the other hand, is simply boiled water and various herbs, so I personally count herbal tea towards my daily water intake goals, which is ideally half of one’s body weight in water. So, if you weigh 120 pounds, for example, you need a minimum of 60oz of water per day, ideally. Herbal tea also gives the added benefits of the nutrients and unique properties of each herb in the blend!

One of my absolute favorite wellness comforts and joys is TEA! โ˜•๐Ÿ’–โ˜• Currently, I’m in love with this wondrous, healing Tulsi Tea in Rose๐ŸŒน by Organic India! Tulsi (aka Holy Basil) is an adaptogenic herb that helps the body adapt to stress by balancing cortisol levels. It’s also rich in magnesium and has so many incredible benefits ranging from anti-inflammatory properties, combating Adrenal fatigue, anxiety, depression, and unbalanced blood sugar. Tulsi is also reported to balance metabolism, increase mood, AND in the Rose blend, Lemon Myrtle is included, which is said to help relieve headaches and cramps. ๐Ÿ‘ The list goes on and on and I’ve been really enjoying making time for at least one or two cups of this herbal tea a day.
I’ve also been doing some research on Tulsi and how it can be beneficial for migraines/chronic headaches and pain, in general. Due to the fact that it’s a rich source of magnesium, which is vital for the overall health and functioning of every system in our bodies, it makes sense that this tea can help those who are magnesium deficient. Stress and chronic, underlying inflammation are also contributing factors to migraines and Tulsi Leaf has strong anti-inflammatory properties. I’m so glad I gave it a try and I’m really looking forward to trying all of the amazing flavors the brand Organic India has! This is by far the best tasting Rose tea I’ve tried and it brings warm feelings of Spring and Sunny Days, which is exactly what we all need right now! Curb the Negative Self Talk & Negative Thinking:

This is a tough one because it’s so deeply rooted and habitual for us to think the worst of others, ourselves, and the world at large, particularly when our sense of “normal” is crumbling around us. This tip takes a lot of effort to first notice our negative thought patterns & then make an active effort to re-frame the negative thought. For example, you find yourself thinking, “I can’t do this for another day”. Take notice of the thought and then try to re-frame it to something more positive, such as, “I can handle one day at a time & focus on what I CAN control.” We may not be able to control the situation unfolding around us, but we can control how we react to it by being mindful of these thought patterns.

I like to have a notebook handy (or an app to keep notes on my phone) and I write down the negative thought I just took notice of, while taking time to think of a more positive way to go about it and then I write down the positive alternative either next to or underneath the negative thought. This technique helps our brains really understand the difference & is the foundation for creating a healthier thought pattern over time. It may seem like more “work” in the beginning, but I promise this work will help you in immense ways in the long run!

Declutter your living space:

Create a sense of calming ambiance in your home! I am the Queen of accumulating clutter ๐Ÿ˜…, so believe me when I say I KNOW how hard it is to get motivated to de-clutter, especially when time is limited. BUT, aside from all the studies that have proven this theory, I can attest to the fact that a less cluttered space makes me feel SO much lighter, clearer, uplifted, & CALMER! We become so accustomed to our surroundings that we often overlook the effect they have on us, whether positive or negative, but we do particularly ignore negative effects as much as possible. Now that we are self-isolating at home during this quarantine that can last months longer, NOW is the time to make your living space sacred. Your home is your haven, your safe place; a place to rest your feet as well as your heart and mind.

If your space is already clutter-free, good for you!!! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿ™Œ Now, take it a step further and work on utilizing the space you have! Whether that is re-arranging furniture to better suit your needs & create a whole new look to a room, or adding different calming elements, such as design aspects, like hanging that tapestry you got for your birthday two years ago! Himalayan Salt Lamps & Rose Quartz Lamps are my absolute favorite ways to add warmth, subtle/calming light, and a meditative ambiance throughout my house. Plus, Himalayan Salt lamps have negative ions that naturally dispel dust, dirt, & filter the air! They are truly MAGICAL!
