Au Naturale Cosmetics BRAND SPOTLIGHT! Review with Before & After Photos!

Spread the love

Au Naturale is a brand that I’ve been so incredibly curious about for many years! So, when they reached out to me to offer to send me four of their products from their 100% Natural, Vegan, & Cruelty-Free Makeup line in exchange for my honest review, I jumped at the opportunity! I didn’t expect to love the products, though, so I told them that I wasn’t making any promises. I’ve been trying to find a natural replacement for my old, beloved stick foundation from Loreal that was discontinued at least 15 years ago. I’ve been into natural makeup for 11 years now and I still have not found a stick foundation that I’ve liked until now! I am so, so excited to share this epically long and incredibly detailed review of who Au Naturale is, what they’re about, and how their makeup actually performs on my oily, acne-prone skin! Sit back and relax because this post is filled with photos and details galore of everything Au Naturale and beyond!

In this post I’ll be doing a before and after series of photos to show you in full HDR the following Au Naturale products in action: Completely Covered Creme Concealer, Zero Gravity C2P Foundation, Su/Stain Matte Lip Stain in On Pointe, The Anywhere Creme Multistick in Sweetheart.

Products and Swatches

The Anywhere Creme Multistick in Sweetheart:

Here is Sweetheart on my cheeks:

Sweetheart is described on Au Naturale’s site as being a soft, nude mauve and I would describe it as a medium mauve with a slight warm undertone to balance it out. It literally looks like my natural flush when I apply it and it has a very soft, natural sheen with zero overt shimmer. Skin isn’t naturally matte, and this blush mimics one’s natural skin glowing from within in a subtle way. The cream consistency is unique in that it isn’t oily or rich in the traditional cream sense, it’s actually more of a solid powder consistency with a dry cream formula. This makes it VERY wearable across all skintypes and particularly for my fellow oily-skinned gals out there! This product does not disturb my foundation or coverage level at all and lasts all day long without any fading! It can be applied straight from the stick or dabbed on with a brush. I like to apply it both ways (one after the other) for the most beautiful, rosy flush that really livens up my face!

Price: $35

Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam Seed Oil), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ricinus Communis (Casto Seed Oil), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla Wax), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Seed Oil), Organic Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender Oil), Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca Root Starch), Iron Oxides, Titanium Dioxide, Micas, Silica.

Su/Stain Matte Lip Stain in On Pointe:

On Pointe is described as a “ballerina pink”, but I would describe it more as a light, nude mauve with a satin-matte, cream finish. I just can’t jump on board the completely matte lip bandwagon because I can’t stand drying lip products and I just don’t feel that 100% matte lip products are particularly flattering (on me). I’m happy to report that these lip stains are a perfect, wearable variation on the matte lip trend! These lip stains are so, so moisturizing that I could wear this product all day and not be craving my tinted lip balms! I can only wear the velvet matte lipsticks by 100% Pure one time before my lips are screaming for more hydration. Also, interestingly, Au Naturale’s Lip Stains smell EXACTLY like 100% Pure lip products! It’s the same exact berry scent, which is mild and refreshing. As far as longevity, I don’t find these to be exceptionally long-lasting if I eat anything. The oil in food breaks down the product as easily as any other lip product I own so I wouldn’t refer to this as a “stain”, per say. The color does fade gradually and holds up for at least 4 hours during normal wear in between meals. It does leave some creamy color behind that blends well with anything you apply afterwards!

I’ve read some reviews that state that this color is brown in tone and dark, but I found neither to be true and I have very pale lips naturally, so any color usually appears very pigmented and true to color on me. If this color were any lighter, it would definitely wash me out, so I find it to be the perfect depth of color for day to day wear for any occasion. This is definitely one of the safest and most neutral tones in the Su/stain Matte Lip Stain line! This also reminds me of one of those coveted Kylie Jenner type colors that have become so popular in recent years!

Completely Covered Crème Concealer in Beige:

Completely Covered Cream Concealer in Beige has a drier consistency than their cream foundation. I was matched with shade Beige, which is described on their site as a light shade with neutral undertones and I would agree with that, however, I feel that this shade leans more yellow, which is perfect for me because I have fair skin with yellow undertones. Yellow also helps to counteract redness and other discolorations. My personal opinion is that I never feel that concealer of any kind really offers full coverage (for example, Hynt Beauty’s duet concealer is the most overrated product I’ve ever encountered in the Green Beauty scene IMHO and I get medium coverage at best from it). This concealer from Au Naturale provides the same level of coverage as the Hynt concealer, in my experience, BUT it doesn’t crease and does not budge all day long! I apply this and it immediately sets to a powder finish and due to the fact that it dries down in such a way, when I apply the foundation on top, it really sticks to build and enhance the coverage of both products (which I’m assuming was by design).

I’ve also used this concealer as an eye primer as well as an under eye concealer and it works incredibly well under the eyes and will work in a pinch on the lids as a base. I do find that this concealer works best under the eyes as opposed to for spot concealing, as the drier formula can emphasize the texture of blemishes (as seen in my before and after photos) and the concealer will take down the redness a bit, but will not cover blemishes entirely. I wish Au Naturale would release a foundation shade that is an exact match to the color Beige in their concealer! In terms of undereye concealer, this is one of the best I’ve found in Green Beauty that doesn’t crease on me! I also absolutely love the stick-style packaging! I’m not a fan of pan-style cream concealers because they get icky looking super fast because you’re literally smearing your fingers or makeup brush onto the surface and no matter how clean you think your hands are or your brushes are, the dirt builds in no time. I’ve heard people complain about stick foundations and concealers not being hygienic and I just don’t see how or why that is considered to be less hygienic in comparison to pan style products, but maybe that’s just me!

Price: $26

Ingredients: Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam Seed Oil), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ricinus Communis (Castor Seed Oil), Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla Wax), Organic Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba Seed Oil), Organic Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender Oil), Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca Root Starch), Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides, Micas, Zinc Oxide, Silica, Copernica Cerifera (Carnuba Wax). May Contain: Ultramarine Blue, Chromium Oxide Green.

Zero Gravity C2P Foundation in Biscay:

Swatches top to bottom: Foundation in Biscay, Concealer in Beige, Lip Stain in On Pointe, Blush in Sweetheart.

Zero Gravity C2P Foundation in Biscay is described as a light shade with neutral to cool undertones and I would say it’s a neutral color. My camera insists on picking up this particular shade via swatch in a slightly more warm undertone than it appears in real life (which is strange because the other swatches are spot on color-wise!). At first, I thought the shade was too cool toned and a bit too dark for me. Then we had one 78 Degree day, and my face actually saw the sun for once, and ever since the foundation has matched me almost perfectly! I do feel that the shade tends to sort of adjust over time after it becomes one with the skin so there’s some wiggle room in finding your perfect match. This shade also perfectly matches my mother who is one shade darker and more cool toned than I am, overall.

Since I have oily, acne-prone skin, cream foundations have never been my favorite because they’ve always (and I mean always!) have broken me out, clogged my pores, and exacerbated my oily skin. Before choosing this product to try, I looked at the ingredients to ensure there were none of the usual pore clogging offenders that are in 99% of natural cream products (cacao seed butter, coconut oil, emulsifying wax, etc). This foundation has fractionated coconut oil, which acts differently on the skin, so that refined version does not clog pores in the same way as unrefined coconut oil in its natural state. I’m happy to report that this is the first cream foundation that not only doesn’t clog my pores or exacerbate my oily skin, my skin has actually improved tremendously since I’ve been using it!! I even let my mom, who also has very oily skin, try this foundation and she reported that it did not make her any more oily than she normally is and it did not irritate her incredibly sensitive skin! For reference, Root’s Pearl Powder Foundation makes my mom’s face itchy and breaks her out immediately (that’s how sensitive her skin is!)

The cream formula provides a solid medium coverage, completely covering regular hyperpigmentation, evening the skin tone, and taking down the redness in active blemishes. This foundation will not cover acne on its own, but if I dab a little mineral makeup over the foundation on active blemishes, the cream formula serves as the perfect canvas for the powder to cling to for maximum coverage with very little powder. I’m assuming this is also by design because Au Naturale sells a Loose Powder Foundation that I’m really excited to try! If I didn’t have acne, this foundation definitely provides enough coverage on its own. If you want light coverage, just apply less product. The coverage maxes out at medium opacity and if you try to build it up after the first layer, it starts to look a bit cakey and loses it’s beautiful skin-like effect that one layer will provide. This foundation literally does not budge once I put it on and lasts through sweating, working out, thousands of baby kisses with my son a day (I can’t help it, he has the most kissable cheeks!), etc. And, THIS STUFF DOES NOT TRANSFER in ANY WAY in comparison to my loose mineral foundations. Loose mineral makeup, especially when built to full coverage, will transfer everywhere if you hug someone and brush your face against their clothes, you’ll see a trail of it left behind (which is incredibly embarrassing, I’ve just grown to accept it). This cream foundation doesn’t do that! I don’t know what it is, I really don’t, but I’ve been privately doing a happy dance about the lack of transfer for weeks now! The finish is semi-matte and looks like hydrated, glowy skin. Since I have super oily skin, I personally like the finish much better once I’ve applied my finishing powder on top (check out my before and after down below to see how much of a difference setting powder makes for oily skin!).

Lastly, I would like to say that this is hands down the easiest and most convenient foundation I’ve ever applied. You just swipe it on your face, blend with clean fingers, and bam, done! I literally do this without looking in the mirror as I follow my son around the house as he explores every room (he’s 17 months old). It’s hard to explain in words, but there’s something really soothing about applying this cream foundation with my fingers- it just feels so natural, meditative, and the way that nature intended. Loose Mineral Makeup is such a chore to apply if you want medium or full coverage on its own! I’ve grown to really hate it and I think my skin needed as much of a break from it as the rest of me! My skin is responding so well to not using a foundation brush and not dabbing a brush into my skin in a stippling motion, which may have been causing more irritation than I ever realized. A month ago, my skin was angry with moderate acne and now it’s appeased with mild acne. Let’s see how it will be in more time!

Price: $38

Makeup Before & After

I was back and forth about the idea of showing my bare face in HD photos for the world to see for as long as my site is up and running, but in the end, I decided that being real and authentic means more to me than any longstanding insecurities I may have about the state of my naked skin. I’ve struggled with acne since puberty and it only got worse in adulthood. So, I have many years worth of scarring and hyperpigmentation. Believe it or not, my skin is in an okay state for me with some mild acne as I mainly focus on healing any leftover scarring (Skincare post coming soon!). In order to show you how this makeup truly performs, I didn’t edit my photos in any way or use any type of filter. I actually never do because I want you to see me as a real person with real flaws because we shouldn’t be ashamed of it or feel that we have to hide from it. Forgive my crazy brows, I’ve been super lazy about them, lately! So, here goes!

Bare Face:

I have a decent sized blemish that’s very new and very angry at the moment. It’s trying to heal, so it’s in a very awkward stage, which is the most difficult kind to cover. This is the perfect opportunity to show the makeup in action!

After the Concealer: Applied under my eyes, on my eyelids, on my cheeks, and just a touch around the sides of my mouth where I have some scarring.

After the Foundation:

As you can see, the foundation covered all of my redness, evened out my skintone, all minor scarring is covered, the blemish is looking much less obvious, and left a semi-matte finish. I have some dryness around my nose that the foundation clung to a bit, but watch it disappear after setting powder!

After Setting with Powder:

How amazing is that difference?? It looks like I used a blurring filter, but I promise I didn’t!! My pores are completely wiped out, the shine is reduced immensely and the foundation is fully set and locked in for the day.

Finished Face:

Au Naturale Concealer in Beige, C2P Foundation in Biscay, Blush in Sweetheart, Lip Stain in On Pointe, cream eyeshadow (sample) in Bliss (sheer, light pink), Pure Anada’s matte, translucent finishing powder, and W3ll People Mascara in Brown.

Different Lighting:

After 8 hours under studio lights (photo is a reference for the foundation, not the lip stain after 8 hours! The lip stain was reapplied about 2 hours prior to this photo}:

Let’s talk about pricing!! As you know if you’ve been following me for a while, I’m a big proponent of supporting affordable brands (NO Keijer Weis here!) because I truly believe that quality, 100% Natural products do NOT have to cost a fortune! In fact, many brands in the green beauty scene are simply buying wholesale products from an outside lab, slapping their pretty labels on them, and selling them at exorbitant prices simply because they can and people keep buying it, but perhaps that’s a topic for a different day.

Au Naturale is in the mid-level price point where there are definitely a lot of brands that cost more and there are brands that cost less. When we’re looking at brands in this particular price point, how incredibly long the products last is what sealed the deal for me. Products can cost less right off the bat, but if we use them up more quickly, they don’t really cost less in the long run. Stick Foundations, in particular, tend to get used up SUPER fast in my experience and the C2P Foundation is the first one I’ve tried that doesn’t disappear within a month! Here is a photo of how much product I’ve used after using each product nearly every single day for almost one month.

My estimate is that I’ve used about 5% of the cream multi-stick blush, and about 15% of the concealer and foundation, which would mean that I’d use up the blush in about a year (if I used it every single day and if you use the same blush every day, hat’s off to you, my friend! I wish I could be happy with one blush color, lol). I’m guessing I would use the foundation and concealer up in about 6 months of daily use so I feel that the price point of these products is very reasonable and what I would call affordable (for anyone who can afford makeup, in general). If you need less coverage, all of these products would last much longer! Think about how much money you spend on ONE MEAL when you go out to eat at a restaurant!

Au Naturale’s packaging is all eco-friendly, heavy, sleek matte black, aluminum packaging that feels and looks super luxe. The best part is that these four products are all I would need when traveling and I don’t have to deal with loose powder products!! I just sighed in relief, lol, because I recently tipped over my loose powder foundation and it fell off my vanity going EVERYWHERE in slow motion as a long NOOOOO came out of my mouth in despair as I watched the scene unfold before me, powerless to stop it. I digress, though… As a side note, Au Naturale recently repackaged all of their loose powder products into unique pump style packaging to avoid waste and messiness. I’m curious to try it!

Let’s wrap it up, ladies (and gents!). . Au Naturale is celebrating Earth Day with a glorious 20% off EVERYTHING sale, including their gorgeous Spring Collection that I’ve been lusting after! The sale is this weekend only from the 20th-22nd! The Spring Collection is already marked down when purchased in the bundle HERE and the 20% off would be on TOP of this sale price!

This post is officially my longest, most picture heavy to date! This whole process took me just over 22 hours to complete from start to finish. I sincerely hope from the bottom of my heart you’ve found my review and Before and After series helpful! I also hope that the better overall quality in my photos enhanced your experience as a reader so that you can get a true sense of each product in both color and performance on a woman with 32ish, problematic skin! 1. Oh my god… I MUST thank you from the bottom of my heart after reading your post, because I feel SO relieved right now !
In my early 30s and suffering from mild acne (very much like your bare-face pic), I’d often feel a bit depressed at seeing very pretty bloggers like you saying “oh, and I have suffered from acne btw”), and when I look at the marvellous pics, I was like “ok, what acne ? I see nothing, even when scrolling down past posts.” And even when they do, they just won’t describe what is was that made THA BIG CHANGE for them. So I’m very curious and very excited about that brand which I didn’t know about 🙂 (I’m from France btw).
    Thank you so much !

    1. Hi, Lucile! So sorry for the delay in my response and thank you so very much for your kind words!! I know exactly what you mean! Many people who get the occasional blemish consider themselves to be acne-prone, which can be frustrating for others (like ourselves) who really struggle with our skin! I’ll be doing an updated skincare post, soon, so stay tuned! I also just started a scar treatment that I’ll be blogging about and my “before” photos in this post will be the starting point, so stay tuned!! I’m so glad I could help in some way! I hope you’re having a beautiful week, love! 🙏😘💜🌺✨

  2. Thanks for the epic review! I really appreciate your honesty through and through, and this is what made me want to try Au Naturale more than glossed-and-preened-to-perfection reviews and videos from other people. The foundation has been calling me for a long time, and I know they do some powder blush that’s Nars Orgasm dupe, so maybe it’s time I got some new make up? So glad it’s working out so well for you, and all I can say is “Au Naturale, come this way please 💕”

    1. Thank you so much for your lovely comment and kind words, my dearest!! I definitely recommend Au Naturale for those with uber sensitive skin because my mom has the most sensitive skin ever and she had no reaction to the foundation! I, myself, haven’t either. I do wish this brand was available worldwide! I think they might be available from other vendors that sell a variety of natural beauty brands, like Integrity Botanicals, but I’m not sure, since I tend to stay away from those sites since they mainly just carry super luxury brands, which is a shame. Hopefully, indie brands will be able to expand their lines as they get more established across the board. In the meantime, I’m so glad you’re currently using products that are working so well for you! Sending love! 😘🙏💞🌺✨
