I’m finally posting my February Favorites! Better late than never, right?? These posts do take quite a bit of time because I put a lot of thought into them and like to offer a variety in what I feature in relation to the major topics of Natural Beauty, Health, and Wellness! These are some of my favorite blog posts and YouTube videos to watch because I find it so interesting to see what people have been loving the most as the months go by.

In the month of February, I found a lot of products that have become my Holy Grail (HG) daily staples and I’m so excited to share these with you! I also got some amazing products at the end of February, but to make it fair, I’ll wait until I do my March Favorites to include those goodies!

Natural & Cruelty-free Makeup

It’s so important to me to feature Indie makeup brands that are not only cruelty free, but they’re made by wonderful, talented, and creative women who put their heart and soul into their work. Once you venture into trying Indie makeup products, you’ll never be fully satisfied with conventional or drugstore makeup products ever again. The overall level of uniqueness and integrity that are part of the amazing products these women hand-make is unparalleled by mass-produced products.

Root Cosmetics:

I did an entire post on this Pearl Powder foundation and some other mineral products I purchased from Root in my previous blog post here. This is a loose mineral makeup that comes in a sifter jar with a sifter that closes, which really cuts down on the overall mess.

Me wearing the foundation in shade 3:

This Pearl Powder Foundation is the most AMAZING mineral foundation I’ve ever tried, hands down! I did a natural skincare experiment after the start of the new year and my skin absolutely FREAKED OUT with dermatitis, rashes, cystic acne, etc. It was bad…and so incredibly uncomfortable. But, what made it bearable was this incredible foundation, which literally covered EVERYTHING without exacerbating my skin issues. In fact, this foundation played a part in healing my skin troubles with its naturally anti-inflammatory ingredients without any harmful fillers.

I’ll be doing a blog post specifically dedicated to this foundation and how I apply it to achieve full to maximum coverage, but here is a sneak peak of what this product can do:

Yes, this is a GIANT rash all over my face… Lovely. Just lovely… All of the equally lovely blemishes appeared with the rash overnight and I just woke up one morning to a red, swollen, itchy face.

These three photos show: 1. no makeup 2. just foundation 3. foundation, blush, bronzer

Simply A-MA-ZING! This makeup offers natural SPF and only has FOUR ingredients: Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxide, Mica, Zinc Oxide

Foundation: Large Size $16.00

Root Cosmetics also has a line of pressed eyeshadows and blushes, so I picked up a few of these gems to try and they’re perfection, as well!

Eyeshadows left to right: Snow Peach & Stella

Bottom: Blush in Delilah

wp-1457305458833.jpg

Swatches:

The blush in Delilah is the perfect neutral, everyday pink that just makes me look alive and healthy. It matches anything, as well! It’s also pigmented, applies smoothly and evenly and wears all day long without fading!

Snow Peach eyeshadow is the perfect, brightening all over lid shade, brow bone highlight, and inner corner highlight that is a pearl-colored sheen. It also makes a beautiful face highlight! Very pigmented and applies beautifully.

Stella eyeshadow is a brown-based taupe sheen with a bit of gold and something else…almost a warm rosey undertone that shows up under certain lighting. My studio lights were having a hard time picking this one up to do it justice. It’s a great everyday shade as it can be applied all over the lid or in the crease. I love using it paired with Snow Peach for a quick, two shadow neutral look!

Pressed Eyeshadows: $12.00 each

Pressed Blush: $16.00 each

wp-1457305474626.jpg

Root Cosmetics Bronzer in the shade Original Bronze:

This is a matte, loose mineral bronzer that is a very unique shade. It’s not too cool and not too warm. There is no chance of looking like an Oompa Loompa here…nor is there any chance of looking like you belong in that god-awful show Jersey Shore!

wp-1457305535137.jpgwp-1457305524844.jpg

Swatches:

As the swatches show, this shade is a medium brown with both cool and warm undertones, as well as a bit of Rose, which is what makes it unique. This shade can be used as a bronzer, contour shade, blush, and it also makes the perfect crease shade as an eyeshadow!

It applies very smoothly and evenly, wears all day, and a little bit goes a long way.

$11.00 and comes in two other shades.

Root Cosmetics 100% Lash Natural Mascara in Black:

I’m always on the hunt for a natural Mascara that doesn’t give me the dreaded spider lashes and I also struggle to find a mascara that doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes.

When I first tried this mascara, it didn’t “wow” me, but fast forward to two days later and something magical happened to this formula once the tube was opened for a couple of days and I swear, this stuff gets better and better as the weeks go by!

I have the most lackluster, stick-straight, wimpy eyelashes and most natural mascaras give me length, but no volume, which looks ridiculous. This stuff curls my lashes, holds them up all day long, separates my lashes, gives definition, volumizes, AND STRENGTHENS my lashes with its proprietary all-natural formula with good-for-your-lashes ingredients! So, it’s acting as both a mascara and eyelash treatment at the same time. My lashes used to fall out just by me touching them. Now, after about a month of using this product almost every day, my lashes are so much stronger. When I take my eye makeup off at night, I still think I’m wearing mascara when it’s off because of how much my eyelashes have improved!

Ingredients: Water, Organic Chamomile Hydrosol, Carnauba Wax, Mica, Organic Coffee Powder, Organic Rice Powder, Organic Sunflower Seed Oil, Organic Corn Starch, Lecithin, Vitamin E, Oregano Leaf Extract, Thyme Extract, Cinnamon Bark Extract, Rosemary Flower Extract, Goldenseal Root Extract, Organic Lemon Peel Extract, Organic Grapefruit Seed Extract, Vanilla Planifolio, Titanium Dioxide, Iron Oxides

$14.00 and comes in Black or Brown

wp-1457305574313.jpg

This was taken 3 weeks ago. Not the greatest picture because I find it so incredibly difficult to capture my lashes in a photo. But, this photo does show that my lashes are curled (without using a lash curler) and they have volume. It looks much better in real life!

Skincare

My Andalou Naturals products and skincare regimen has saved my skin from the disaster that occurred earlier in the month. (No more oil cleansing method for me, thank you very much! I tried it, for the sake of research, but never again!)

To read every single detail of my skincare routine for acne-prone, oily skin, please check out my very thorough blog post My Skincare Routine for Acne-Prone/Oily Skin which goes through everything step by step. These products have been amazing!

Perfume:

My favorite all-natural perfume for the month of February has been the scent called Crush by Wylde Ivy. This scent comprises blackberry leaves, sugar, soft vanilla, and wispy musk that smells sweet without being too sweet. It literally lasts all day long when I spray one spray on my clothes or in my hair. It’s such a calming scent that makes me think of things like wishes coming true and fairy tale magic.

Retails for $23.00 for 1oz in the Spray version. Also comes in perfume oil, body lotion, body butter, and soap.

Health & Wellness

Turmeric Milk has been one of my favorite drinks to prepare. I’ve tried, tested, and tweaked this recipe until I feel it’s as close to perfection as possible. My version tastes like Chai spices and Marshmallows!

For the full recipe and health benefits of Turmeric, please check out my post Turmeric Milk–The Health Drink of the Gods

wp-1457305830391.jpg

Matcha Tea has been one of my favorite teas for years, but Matcha by the brand Got Matcha? is unlike any other Matcha you’ve ever tried before. Plus, the addition of coconut oil and doTERRA’s Clove Essential Oil makes this one an absolute favorite of mine!

Essential Oils have been a huge part of my life over the past couple of years since I’ve been researching how Aromatherapy actually works and I’ve been testing different brands of oils to see if there really is a difference. As I mentioned in my January Favorites! blog post, the past couple of years have been very difficult for me in terms of my physical and mental health. I suffer from anxiety, depression, and chronic headaches/migraines and I’ve searched far and wide for natural treatments. In addition to daily exercise, fresh air, and sunlight (and the inclusion of meaningful hobbies), essential oils have been my rock in getting me through tough times. And to answer the question if there is really a difference, other than price points, between brands, I’ve personally found that there definitely is a MAJOR difference.

Different brands use different methods of processing essential oils, which affects the properties within the actual oil. If you’re in it just for a way to smell something nice without the harmful effects of regular phthalate-laden fragrances from conventional candles, then buy the cheapest oils you can find because it doesn’t make a difference. The only difference would be in how much of the oil you’ll need in order to smell it. Lower grade oils take more drops to smell as strong as their higher grade counterparts.

My dog’s vet is the person who introduced me to doTERRA essential oils and once I saw the prices, I took a step back and really considered it. I finally became a member and am now a Wellness Advocate, which means I can help other people sign up to become a member, as well. I really did it to try the products at the Wholesale Price, which only members can do. This is how I know that there is a big difference, not only in how the product smells, but in what the product is designed to do aromatherapy-wise.

A few months ago, doTERRA released their line of essential oil aromatherapy blends designed for specific emotions: Cheer, Motivate, Console, Peace, & Forgive.

I’ve been using these blends a lot in the month of February to help me through Winter. After the holidays are over, Winter tends to hit me hard. The cold, dark days make me literally feel cold and dark… I’ve set up a little oasis where my computer is and I placed one of my diffusers right next to it so that whenever I’m writing or blogging, I can have my essential oils diffusing. Each one of these has helped me get through the dreary days, layer by layer.

Fitness

Regular exercise is so important for everyone, but especially for people who suffer from mental health related concerns. I’m a much stronger person emotionally when I’m dedicated to my workout routine. My depression lifts and my anxiety becomes much more manageable so that natural treatments like Aromatherapy can actually crack through the surface and work their magic.

The most important advice that I can ever give anyone who struggles to stick to an exercise plan is to find a type of workout you GENUINELY ENJOY and intuitively connect with. For example, if I had to go to a gym everyday or workout with Jillian Michaels, I’d NEVER stick to a workout routine, even knowing all of the benefits of working out! I just wouldn’t be able to stay motivated enough to tolerate it.

So, for me personally, I need my own space in my house where I can workout in peace. Some people find this doesn’t work for them because they’re more motivated by physically going to a gym, which is perfectly fine. You just have to find what your preference is and what works for you.

I’m an introvert, so going to workout classes isn’t my thing. I’ll always find an excuse not to show up. But, if I can workout in the privacy of my own home whenever is best for me, I can’t talk myself out of it as easily. So, my ideal preference is using workout DVDs and instructors who post full-length free workouts on YouTube.

The first type of workouts that I’ve ever felt a true connection with are Kundalini Yoga workouts with Ana Brett and Ravi Singh. Working out didn’t click into place for me until I found this type of yoga and not only saw the changes in my body, but felt the changes unraveling throughout my entire being. My mindset became more relaxed. I was less fixated on using substances to “feel” a certain way because I was finally in tune with the present moment. I learned Mindfulness and the power of appreciating the now.

I was in an accident 15 years ago where I essentially fell 30 feet and my back has sustained injuries ever since. My doctor’s solution was to put me on pain medication for the rest of my life after physical therapy and cortisone injections didn’t work. After doing Kundalini Yoga, I started strengthening my core muscles during my practice, and suddenly for the first time in my life, I wasn’t in daily pain anymore! Fast forward 10 years later and if I stop working out for a few days, my back will immediately start hurting all over again. I can’t stress enough how important it is for back-pain sufferers to STRENGTHEN YOUR AB AND CORE MUSCLES! Without having a strong core (or center), your posture is atrocious and your back will try to pick up the slack, which leads to slipped/pulled discs, muscle problems, and PAIN from the imbalance. Everyone who struggles with back pain always gets the same story from me about how I’ve overcome my personal struggle with chronic back pain and as soon as they hear that they can’t take a pill to magically make it go away, they suddenly stop listening to me. We live in a society that really fights against the idea of working out to better ourselves, to better our health and wellness.

This is just one shelf of my Kundalini Yoga DVDs.

Laying out your workout clothes the night before makes me really motivated to stick to my workout plans the next day.

In the below photo, my favorite eco-friendly workout clothes by the brand Green Apple Active are shown. These workout clothes are made from organic cotton and bamboo! They are the softest material I’ve ever felt and the designs are beautiful. They are very pricey, though, so I always wait for their clothes to go on sale. I just bought 8 new items during their most recent 75% off sale!

They’re actually having a different sale right now. You can also save an additional 25% off by using my referral link: here.

When we try to live a healthier lifestyle, any small change that you make is important and each small change adds up to BIG, life-altering results! It’s not about beating ourselves up for what we’re not doing; rather it’s about honoring the things that we ARE doing to improve our lives and to make the world a brighter place.

I hope you’ve found this February Favorites post helpful! Please feel free to ask me any questions in the comments below! I’m here to help in any way I can.

Thanks so much for stopping by.

Have a beautiful and healthy day!

xoxo,

Julie

  1. This is such an excellent blog post that covers so many important topics! I also love Ravi and Ana’s workouts and would recommend them to anyone wanting to change the way they feel about their life, as well as how they feel about their bodies.

  2. I love this post – I’m really interested in trying that foundation. I’m enjoying the Bare Minerals Hydrating Gel at the moment, and really like it for my dry skin. I’ve never tried turmeric milk! Looks interesting, I’ll have to give it a go!

    1. Thank you so much! I’m so glad you found it helpful! What’s great about mineral foundation is that you can apply your moisturizer beforehand and use the powder on top, or you can make your own custom serum foundation by mixing a couple drops of your chosen oil with the mineral powder. You can do this with your moisturizer, as well! I also like applying the mineral foundation with a damp beauty blender type sponge. I’ve tried so many mineral foundations and this one is my favorite! When you try the Turmeric Milk, please let me know what you think! 💜

  3. Very nice!! I really liked the foundation you featured, and for its quality, the price seems very reasonable. And I’ve been wanting to try aromatherapy as well (I deal with anxiety too), but this is a good guide on brands. 🙂

    1. Thank you! I’m so glad you liked my post! The foundation beats out any other mineral foundation or conventional foundation I’ve ever tried! You can also get it in different sizes for less money to try it out. Aromatherapy has really been so helpful to me. I learn more and more about it each day! 💜🌹
