Hi, everyone! Today I will be posting a recipe for Banana Milk, which is an amazing dairy free alternative to regular milk! As I’ve gotten older, my body doesn’t produce enough enzymes to effectively break down lactose in milk, so I’ve been using coconut milk and almond milk for years. I’ve even made almond milk in the past, which is fun as a DIY project, but it does take some time and it doesn’t end up saving a lot of money.
There’s also an ingredient in many dairy-free milk options called Carageenan, which is designed to preserve the liquid for longer, but it wreaks havoc on our digestive systems! Brands like So Delicious are now advertising that they are “Carageenan-free” after much heated debate over the years.
One major advantage of making your own dairy-free milk is that you design what you want to add to it. It may not have as long of a shelf life, which can be disconcerting, but that’s why I wanted to include this amazing Banana Milk recipe on my blog! Banana Milk is super easy to make with minimal ingredients that you most likely already have in your kitchen!
This recipe serves 1 person:
- 1 Banana (frozen or room temperature)
- 1 cup of filtered water
- 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon (or cinnamon to taste–I personally eyeball it)
- Pinch of salt (I like himalayan pink salt or sea salt)
- 1 drop of Doterra Clove Essential Oil (optional)
Combine all ingredients in a blender (I personally use the Nutri-bullet because it’s the perfect size and so easy to clean afterwards). Blend until smooth (time will vary depending on blender used). Done!
I only recommend using Doterra essential oils if you are planning to utilize essential oils in recipes to ingest. Doterra and Young Living are the only essential oils that have been approved for internal use, due to strict standards on how the oils are produced. I personally love diffusing Clove essential oil and taking it internally, as it contains an incredible amount of antioxidants and has amazing immune-boosting properties. ONE drop is all you need.
You can also customize this recipe depending on your mood or cravings. For example, you can add vanilla extract for a creamy vanilla flavor. You can add cacao powder or cocoa powder (they’re two different things) to add a nice chocolate flavor. You can also add honey or stevia to sweeten it a bit more, as well!
The best part is how incredibly cost effective this recipe is because you’re essentially using water and a single banana (plus a small amount of other ingredients for added flavor).
This Banana Milk can be used in cereal, oatmeal, baked goods, or blended into smoothies. I particularly love using it in cereal if I’m crunched for time and then I use the leftover banana milk to blend into my Green Smoothie recipe that I wrote about here. If you use a Nutri-bullet, you need to add some form of liquid to the Max line and this is a great way to get an added fruit in without taking extra space in your smoothie mix, which means you can add even more nutrients to your smoothie by incorporating more fruits and veggies!
