Review of Primal Pit Paste Deodorant

wp-1454019999068.jpg

Hi, everyone! Today I will be reviewing my favorite natural deodorant from the brand called Primal Pit Paste. This is a really important post because if you can switch over to ONE natural product in your lives, it should be switching to a natural deodorant. Over the past decade I’ve sampled, researched, and tested dozens of natural deodorants and so-called natural deodorants that still contain harmful ingredients like propylene glycol and parabens, which is why it’s very important to read all ingredients on an item’s packaging (even if you’re shopping at Whole Foods or a “health-food store”).

The biggest complaint that I hear and that I’ve experienced myself is that most natural deodorants simply don’t work or just aren’t as effective as their toxin-laden, conventional counterparts. The issue with conventional, mainstream deodorants is that they are FILLED with carcinogenic ingredients to preserve the item for longer shelf life, to make the item smell pretty or masculine, and to make the item prevent you from sweating. Some of these ingredients are parabens, which are endocrine disruptors that have been found to increase risk of developing breast cancer, in particular. Research has found traces of parabens in tumors that have been removed from cancer patients. Parabens increase estrogen in the body, which disrupts hormone production, thus interfering with every single bodily process. The other major carcinogen in mainstream deodorants is aluminum, which prevents sweating, however, traces of aluminum have also been found in tumors that have been removed from cancer patients. Some other harmful ingredients are phthalates (which are carcinogenic and are found in non-natural fragrance). Propylene Glycol is some very harsh, toxic stuff that is put in products to make them go on more smoothly, however, this ingredient causes rashes and skin problems because of how harsh it is. It can literally wipe the paint off a car. Do you really want to smear that on your body every day?

These ingredients are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to harmful ingredients in mainstream deodorants. Also look for these ingredients in other skin-care items you may be using (shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, soap, etc.).

Our armpits have very sensitive skin and they’re designed to release built up toxins in our bodies through perspiration. When we apply chemical-laden deodorant to a sensitive area with thin skin, our arm pits soak up the harmful ingredients and when our bodies try to dispel the toxins through perspiration, the anti-perspirant action of the deodorant PREVENTS our bodies from releasing these toxins. So, these toxins get re-absorbed back into our bodies and linger, thus increasing the likelihood of causing very serious problems.

This is why natural deodorants work differently than conventional deodorants. Natural deodorants are designed to combat the bacteria that produces when we sweat, which neutralizes any unwanted odors that our bodies may produce. However, natural deodorants do not prevent sweating because, as mentioned above, sweating is our bodies natural process of eliminating toxins in our bodies. We want and need to let our bodies do what it’s designed to do. We sweat for a very good reason and we shouldn’t want to stop it from happening. Natural deodorants will however make sweating less likely to cause embarrassing stinkiness.

So, rest assured, you don’t have to go from putting carcinogens on your body every day in order to smell good……to sweating in copious amounts while scaring off everyone around you with your overwhelming stinkiness!

For years I was using a crystal-based deodorant from The All Natural Face until it just stopped working effectively. I don’t think my body got used to it, I personally feel that each batch would vary in effectiveness because the company isn’t necessarily the best with quality-control…..or customer service for that matter. So, the hunt for looking for a new deodorant commenced and I was back at square one, while still trying to use up The All Natural Face deodorants that I had in the meantime. That, however, was a very bad decision because it turns out that this deodorant was actually making me smell worse. When I would try a new deodorant, I’d layer it over The All Natural Face one I was using, not realizing that I was preventing the new deodorant from ever having a chance to succeed. Not using deodorant at all was a better option than using The All Natural Face or an ineffective natural deodorant. There’s something about certain natural deodorants that can make a person actually smell worse and this can be very discouraging.

I do also want to note that for women, when it’s our “time of the month” or whenever we are going through any form of hormonal changes, we will have a propensity to smell less pleasant than usual due to these hormonal fluctuations. So, I wouldn’t suggest trying a natural deodorant during that particular time of the month and then writing it off because it didn’t do the job right away. Give it time to work its magic while your body balances itself out.

Lastly, there’s something called Pit-Detox. This means that when switching from conventional deodorant to natural deodorant your body goes through a transitioning phase while it gets used to being able to naturally release toxins the way it’s designed to. This can really come as a shock to our systems and one that our bodies really work hard to get used to. This is also because a lot of toxins have been built up and stored for years upon years, while being stifled by anti-perspirants in conventional deodorants. This takes some time to release, therefore, you may go through a period where you’re going to sweat more and release odors more than usual. Don’t worry, this does not last very long!

Primal Pit Paste’s web site has a ton of helpful information on everything I’ve discussed in this blog post, along with more details on Pit-detox. Primal Pit Paste uses baking soda to neutralize bacteria and is blended into a paste with natural oils/butters and essential oils for natural scents. They also offer stick-deodorants and baking soda-free deodorants if you find that your under arm area is sensitive to baking soda. If you are sensitive to baking soda, you’ll find that your underarms get itchy and begin to form a rash from the baking soda.

I’m not sensitive to baking soda, so I use their original formula in the paste version that comes in a 2oz glass jar, which is pictured in this post. What I do is I use my finger tip to scoop out a pea-sized amount of the paste and rub the product into each underarm (one pea sized amount per arm pit). My favorite scents are Primal Spice (orange & clove) and Jacked Up Jasmine (Jasmine, lime, & Ylang Ylang). My husband also uses this deodorant, finds that it works well for him (and he has a very physically demanding job where this stuff is put to the test). There are a variety of scents (and unscented), along with three different options: original, extra strength, and baking-soda free versions.

I put this on in the morning and even after I do a sweaty workout the following day before I take a shower, I still smell fresh. I’m incredibly sensitive to smells (it’s really a burden to be honest!), so believe me, if I didn’t smell fresh, I’m the first one to notice it. I don’t need to re-apply throughout the day. However, if you find that you feel more comfortable re-applying throughout the day or if you are a woman on birth control and are producing more sweat than usual, you can buy a sample size, which comes in a smaller jar and you can keep it with you throughout your day.

I’ve been repurchasing Primal Pit Paste deodorant from //ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&OneJS=1&Operation=GetAdHtml&MarketPlace=US&source=ac&ref=qf_sp_asin_til&ad_type=product_link&tracking_id=completenat03-20&marketplace=amazon&region=US&placement=B00O59LG0A&asins=B00O59LG0A&linkId=db04698643739dbb3e0fb959be70f4c4&show_border=false&link_opens_in_new_window=false&price_color=333333&title_color=0066c0&bg_color=ffffff” target=”_blank”>Amazon.com.

I hope you’ve found this review helpful and I hope that if you change one thing in your life, please switch to a more natural deodorant! It’s not just healthier for you and for your family, but it’s also better for the environment because those nasty chemicals in conventional deodorant are no longer being flushed down drains and going into the earth’s soil. We can also change what is being produced by consumer demand!

Have a happy and healthy day!

  1. I absolutely love this stuff! I kissed my toxic deodorant stick days goodbye the moment I first bought this product. 😀 I use the primal spice too… It honestly smells somewhat like candy, lol. Thanks for sharing your review! It’s important for other people to know that there are MUCH healthier options–even for their pits. ^_^

    1. I’m so glad you also found Primal Pit Paste! It seems that they stopped carrying the Primal Spice scent, which I’m so sad about! It may also be a LE Holiday scent, as well. I’m really glad I gave this brand a try because I’ve tested so many other natural deodorants that were making me worry that there were no effective natural options. This stuff really works just as well as conventional deodorant! 😀🌈

      1. Oh, no! Don’t tell me that. 😦 Like you, intense scents don’t settle well with me… However, they’re all natural, so perhaps I shouldn’t worry. The words “fragrance” or “perfume” are definitely the ones to watch out for.

From numerous sources, I read that the term “fragrance” could mean there are 600+ different toxins contained within the product itself. It’s a very dangerous blanket term that could literally mean anything… just like “natural flavor.”

I sure hope Primal Paste and any other health-conscious brands stick around for a very long time!

      2. I agree! It’s incredibly disheartening that the FDA doesn’t regulate these terms in any way, shape, or form. I always make sure that a fragrance I use for daily wear is derived from very clear and identifiable sources in a transparent way by the product’s brand. It’s sad because people become more health conscious and start reading ingredient labels and something as seemingly harmless like the term fragrance pops up and they think it’s safe. When they dig deeper and find out it’s not necessarily safe, they get so discouraged! I’ve definitely gone through that phase in my natural journey where I just didn’t know what to trust anymore. Being a conscious consumer takes a lot of awareness and research. I hope I can help people ease through this process!

      3. It honestly gets extremely overwhelming! I feel so weird at the grocery store because I can spend hours at that place reading labels. Bob too. At least him and I share the same views, so we can be ‘strange’ together. 😀

But yeah, the FDA really needs to have more strict regulations. Things that we ingest and put on our bodies shouldn’t be ridden with hidden toxins!

I’m really glad there are people like you out there who share such valuable information. Especially when it comes to beauty. Some women wear this stuff daily and don’t even know how harmful it can be over time (when they don’t pick a conscious brand, of course).

Keep up the great work! 😀
